On October 26th, Walter Wallace Jr. was killed by the police, right here in West Philadelphia, while undergoing a mental health crisis about which the police had been made aware. We stand against systemic racism, police brutality, and the stigmatization of mental health issues. We believe that Black Lives Matter, and have organized this event in an effort to raise money for Walter’s family. Please join us in showing support for the Black Community and helping to heal the gaping wound left by poor training and the over-centralization of power and responsibility in a single institution.
This is an online tournament that requires use of a webcam (cellphones can be used experimentally for this purpose) with overhead setup (easily constructed from household items, including a Magic bundle box), the Magic Companion app with a free Wizards account, and a free account on spelltable.com. We strongly recommend testing out your setup against a friend on Spelltable ahead of the event, to iron out any technical kinks. Prize support will be set aside behind the counter for all players who accrue it, and can be picked up in-person during normal business hours, or can be shipped at no additional cost.
100% of admission fees will go to Walter Wallace Jr.’s family’s GoFundMe page, and we will donate prize support to encourage attendance. 9th through 16th place will also receive two Magic 2021 collector boosters if attendance exceeds 32 players.
